Okay, thanks for your comment Ed. On the one hand, this is just a biblical studies carnival which is to highlight as many of the notable posts of June that I could find and is not about my own reconstruction of Christian origins. I am not sure your comment about Ehrman is fair since I am sure he is familiar with the scholars in your comment. Undoubtedly some teachings of the Sermon on the Mount are old as part of the double tradition (shared with Luke) and under the standard two-documentary hypothesis assigned to "Q" (or even under the Goulder-Goodacre hypothesis or a more chaotic hypothesis where Luke may have known Matthew they may be from older oral or written sources). However, the Sermon on the Mount is also a Matthean redactional framework because Luke has the sayings in a different context (Sermon on the Plain) and Matthew wants to make Jesus into a new Moses. I also think you give too much credit to Paul's influence over the NT Gospels and "Gentile Christianity" - Paul preserves creedal fragments from earlier Jewish Jesus followers to show he is not the sole inventor of the Christ kerygma and I would question that Mark or Matthean are necessarily Pauline or written by Gentile Christians (e.g., see David C. Sim on Matthew as a whole opposed to Paul). I have a more fluid model where some early Jesus followers were passing along sayings of Jesus, others retelling stories of his miracles like a new Moses or Elijah, others reflecting on his death in the tradition of the Maccabean martyrs or the innocent righteous one and believing he had been vindicated by God and Paul making his own distinctive contributions in his own justifications for a Law-free Gentile mission.
